SECTION: Marriage equality in countries
A3 scans of information gathered for info graphics, also a drawing of the purposed design for the pop up.
sources:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_adoption_in_the_United_States
http://www.freedomtomarry.org/
Imagery:
In the infographic I want this section to be one big map of the world with the countries where marriage is legal to be highlighted in a contrasting colour. Places like the USA, Mexico and Europe where the countries get quite small there will need to be a function to "zoom in" so these places can be seen clearer. Further information will be able to be reveal by a roll over function so when a country or a state is clicked information pops up in text and visual form. Some of this information I have in the paper work above.
Inspiration/Design:

Template Research
To save time I am going to need to find an already made up map of the world and maps of Europe, Mexico and USA for the zoomed in parts.
Europe |
USA |
World |
Mexico |
Taking the blank map and adding pink in for the countries that same sex marriage is legal is and a yellow colour for the areas that have some states that allow same sex marriage (USA and Mexico) |
*USA
*Mexico
*Roll over template
Sections to Infographics
Sections that are going to be educational and key to research:
- Marriage equality in countries around the world
- History
- Laws
- Myth
- Lesbians vs Gay men
- Terminology
- Homosexuality and religion
- Animals and Homosexuality
- AIDs/HIV
I may not end up using all of these sections as my research may not prove to be worthy or time might be an issue.
Target Audience
Thinking about design aesthetic, usability and who will be my end user will determine each other. The purpose of the subject and concept is to help educate people what is homosexuality and what place does it have in the world around us. So this brings me to the end user, most likely because it will be educational it would be ideal to be used in schools to help teach. This means that the infographic needs to be engaging in colour and interaction as the key ages are from 13 to 18 years of age. This age area have short attention spans and if its not floating their boat they'll stop interacting pretty quickly. So my main areas that I'll need to focus on are:
- Information is visually pleasing, not too many words as it'll deter people from interacting
- Colours are visually pleasing and are relatable to the subject. Non threatening or low impacting colours with textures to break up the solid colours could be something to explore as then the idea isn't being forced on them.
- Interaction. Because my infographic is going to be mostly fact based and there is no method roll overs and a flow through the different sections is going to be key. The use of icons and tabs will help break up the sections and appeal to users, enticing them to click on thing to see and explore what they do.
Key Places for information
http://www.freedomtomarry.org/ |
This website has facts and figures on the Freedom to marry. Its going to be a big source for my information on marriage equality and it is also inspirational in the way that is designed as well. The colour pallet is engaging and non threatening with integration of texture to soften the solidity of colour.

Great interaction piece for just the states in the USA of what rights people have in relation to being homosexual. Use of roll overs and colour codes.

Concept Brainstorm
Three circled concepts are ones that I could Follow:
- Homosexuality
- History of the British Monarchy
- What sterotype are you?
I think Homosexuality is the concept that I will be using as I myself do not have expansive knowledge on it and due to the marriage equality being a pressing political issue at the moment it will be something take could help educate people on what homosexuality is and the history and present context of homosexuality.

Exploration into infographics + inspiration
https://www.vitamix.com/Be-Inspired/Smoothie-Exploration/How-to-Create-Your-Custom-Green-Smoothie An example of a static infographic that could be turned into a interactive one. |
http://www.becomecareer.com/geeks-hipsters/ Humorous comparison between hipster and geeks, is another prime example of something that could easily be animated or turned into a interactive infographic |
http://m.lolsnaps.com/index.html?id=15522 a different way of looking at the world. And quite simple ways of showing facts and information |
Infographics in video form. Use of colour to indicate each gender. Animation its also interesting and adds to the information given. Making it alot more interesting to watch.
although a bit crude, I thought this way of showing information by using representations of food to show the facts makes it a much more polite and less crude way of showing these facts. The design and cleanliness of the text was a good example of well presented information.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/06/19/nyregion/how-many-households-are-like-yours.html This infographic is interactive. You put in the details and it comes up with how many people in the USA are in a similar living situation to you. I found that less that a thousand live like I do. Really easy to use, but I wanted more visual interaction. |
http://awesome.good.is.s3.amazonaws.com/transparency/web/1109/water-access/flash.html This one was interactive. It was educating the user on how clean water can benefit society. It was interesting interacting with the three main groups and how the pipes were used to see what area of facts you were reading. Imagery is nice and clean. |
http://www.behance.net/gallery/Tower-Graphics-Data-Visualization/984783 Being a bit of a nerd this was cool to look at. This is a static infographic. It is looking at how much the StarWars franchise made to date. I find most of the imagery amusing and it made me engage more with the information given. |
http://awesome.good.is/transparency/web/1009/the-world-of-data/flat.html this infographic utilises the use of the grid really well. I just found the visual flow of how I was suppose to follow the information a bit overwhelming and confusing. |
http://awesome.good.is/transparency/web/1012/lightbulb/flat.html the flow in this static infographic is concise. Information is clear and if one wants more information they can read the finer text. A good example of using more information, but keeping it for people who want to know more. |
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdsdigital/4387344224/sizes/o/in/photostream/ I found this quite interesting. I found the use of the well known drawing by Leonardo Da Vinci drew me into the infographic. The use of the heirachy in the text also helped with visual clues and interest. |
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdsdigital/4405358935/sizes/o/in/photostream/ I thought this one was fun. It would make a really fun and interactive infographic if it was animated and you couldn't see the characters. This would create a mystery of who you would be, rather than trying to get to characters one like and answering questions untruthfully. |
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdsdigital/4473568816/sizes/o/in/photostream/ Another static Infographic. This is a good example of incorporating photos that are not overpowering and using colour to make information stand out. |
